Five Ways To Participate In the Virtual Día De Los Muertos Festival

The Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center is excited to present a virtual Día De Los Muertos Celebration, launching on November 1, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. This online program will feature a Danza Azteca ceremony, ballet folklórico performances, artist workshops in both English and Spanish, arts exhibits, and a cultural talk where community members will share the importance of Día De Los Muertos for their families. There will also be a community ofrenda (altar) at the Ballet Folklórico Dance Studios and Huarache Express Locations at the Simi Valley Town Center.

All content can be accessed at the virtual event webpage, www.svvac.org/diadelosmuertos, beginning November 1, 2020, with an accompanying livestream from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. that will begin on the Cultural Arts Center’s Facebook page. You can also view on Zoom by registering here.

We know it’s a little different to celebrate virtually this this year, so we have come up with different ways to participate while following all social distancing requirements.

Check them out here:

1. Tune In to the Live Broadcast:

The live broadcast will run from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the SVCAC’s facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SVCAC3050. This will be your chance to see the debut of all the performances and workshops, and gain a firsthand experience with the artists.

2. Submit Artwork for the Youth Art Exhibit

Are you a local artist age 25 or under? We are hosting a special Youth Art Exhibit as part of the Día De Los Muertos Celebration. All you need to do is submit photos of your work here: https://bit.ly/svcacddlmart. Artist work will be featured in the live broadcast, on an online gallery, and will be eligible for a prize. All submissions must be received by 10/29/2020 at 11:59 p.m.

3. Las Catrinas De La Comunidad

As part of our celebration, the Cultural Arts Center will be highlighting photos and videos of Catrinas from the community. All you need to do is take a photo or quick video of your costume and submit it to be featured with the other Catrinas from the community. All Catrinas can be submitted here:  https://bit.ly/svcaccatrinas All submissions must be received by 10/29/2020 at 11:59 p.m.

4. Photos for the Community Ofrenda

Ballet Folkórico Cielito Lindo De Simi Valley and Huarache Express will be hosting community Ofrendas (altars) at their location in the Simi Valley Town Center. Community members will have the opportunity to have their friends and relatives who have passed remembered on the altar by dropping off copies of photos. Photos can be dropped off from10:00 am to 12:00 p.m. on November 1, 2020 at the Simi Valley Town Center, 1555 Town Center Way Unit 290.   The Ofrenda will be on display through November 1, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. until  November 2, 2020. Make sure to visit the Ofrenda at night to see the candles illuminate the photos and other items of rememberance.

Please note: Copies of photos will not be returned.

5. Watch the Videos On Demand

Can’t make the live broadcast? The good news is that all of the videos and workshops will be available online and on demand on www.svvac.org/diadelosmuertos. This will give you chance to watch the Danza Azteca ceremony and Ballet Folklórico performances, and refine your artistic technique as your schedule allows.
